The Thumbnail Cache
What is the thumbnail cache?
The thumbnail cache is the location for thumbnails which are created for each image that is added to a MyPixelVault repository. Each thumbnail is a JPEG image of 150x150 pixels in size and is used to build the search thumbnail display and can be used instead of the full sized image to display an image preview (see the settings page for more information). Loading the thumbnail is many times faster than loading the full sized image, especially for very large images or when accessing images across a network.
I'm getting low on space, can I move it?
Yes, for optimum performance it is worth keeping it on the same PC that MyPixelVault is installed on, or a device with a fast link to the local PC.
Do I really need the cache?
The size of the cache should only be around 1-3% of the size of all of the images you add to any repository. So if you have 2GB of large images, the cache will only be around 20MB. It makes it much quicker to generate the search thumbnail display. It can also be used to preview images much quicker.
What does rebuilding the thumbnail cache actually do?
MyPixelVault goes through each image in the currently opened repository and creates an image for it.
